Mani Monday – Reinvent Me Edition

“I can take that meeting on Tuesday if that is the only time that works, but my chakras are likely to be a bit out of whack.”  I half joked to my husband as we were confirming a meeting.  “Well we don’t need that on a regular basis.  I’ll avoid Tuesdays in the future.”  Neither my husband nor I would be described as woo-woo or new age, but we both know that the class just works for me.

I go to classes regularly at Unplug, a meditation studio in Los Angeles where the Tuesday Chakra balancing class led by Camilla Sacre-Dallerup takes place.  She is a gift and her approach and strategies are so simple, yet profound.  I wrote about how her approach and a particular mediation bolstered my cleaner eating habits here.  I was so excited to get my hands on her new book, Reinvent Me.  The cover also served as the perfect nail art inspiration.

The manicure and nail art are by Olive & June.  The colors are “Looks to Thrill” by Essie Gel Couture and “Alpine Snow” by OPI.

Mani Monday – Star Edition

Who are the stars of your story? I have been asking myself that question in a number of ways.  In my meditation practice I am working on making my internal narrator a positive one.  That voice has a lot of air time and it is not always kind.

Last week my husband and I attended a memorial service for someone my husband worked with right after business school.  I never met her and she was gone far too young to breast cancer.  The service was beautiful and inspiring.  The stars of her story had genuine love for her.  She had made her friendships and interactions count. The finite nature of our lives was brought home, but I also thought about how she will remain a star in the stories of those whose lives she impacted.  Life is short.  I am dedicated to flashing the smile, extending the kindness, going the extra mile, attending the concert or performance and being present.  I want to be a positive star in the lives I touch and in my own story.

The manicure and nail art are Olive & June.  The color is “Haute to Trot” by Essie Gel Couture.

Mani Monday – Goldfish Edition

“Harry!  Where is Sally?” I am  panicked.  “I know ten days is a long time, but the time-release feeder still has some food left.  Did you eat her?  Did you eat Sally?”, I plead, desperate for a response I know I’ll never get.

Where could she be?  She jumped to her almost death once before. I came home just in time to put her back in the bowl.  I don’t see her or any remains on the floor near the bowl.  What happened to her?  I knew ten days was too long.  I had planned on eight and ended up extending my trip to San Francisco.  Not since I transported them from 30th and Madison to 13th and University have I been this worried.

Harry and Sally were the perfect New York City pets.  They greeted me each night when I got home.  Cleaning their tank satisfied my need to care for something other than myself and just looking at them lowered my blood pressure (or so I read). I had won them at the Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy within a few months of moving to New York.

For the next four days I eye Harry suspiciously each time I walk by the bowl.  One afternoon I get home early from a meeting and catch my bi-monthly housekeeper on her way out.

“Hello, Consuelo.”

“Hello, Ms. Jennifer.”

“Do you know where Sally went?”

“Who?  Do you have a roommate?

“The fish, the smaller one.”

“Oh, she was stuck to the floor last time.  I cleaned the floor.   I am so sorry.  You were in California and I did not want to bother you.”

“I am so relieved.  I thought Harry ate her.”

She gives me a puzzled look.

“I’m sorry about your fish.”
“Me too.  But I’m relieved Harry isn’t a cannibal.”

I will never forget.

I will never forget how lucky I was and am.

I will never forget the sounds of the plane and the sounds of the crash.

I will never forget the texture of the air.

I will never forget the horror.

I will never forget the kindness and compassion that I felt from fellow New Yorkers in the days and weeks after.

I will never forget.

Mani Monday – Coffee Edition

There are a couple of things besides my regular mediation practice that bring me instant calm and grounding.  The first is a good blow dry.  When my hair is in place everything around me can be in chaos and I definitely handle it better.  The second is an iced latte with homemade almond milk.  I was recently in San Diego for a few days of fun with a childhood friend.  While it was a great visit, I have been traveling a lot lately and I definitely needed help with grounding.  I made regular visits to my favorite Lofty Coffee for their delicious almond milk iced latte as well their perfectly cooked eggs and avocado.  You can read more about my first visit last year to Lofty Coffee here.

The manicure and nail art are by 20 Lounge.  The color is “Do you take Lei Away” by OPI.

Items in the photos include:

Fitbit Flex 2 in Navy

Mani Monday – Golden Gate Edition

“Just one more cable car ride, Mommy” said my seven year old on our last morning in San Francisco.  We had a hard time leaving “The City”.  A one night stay at the Fairmont was extended to two nights and then we were having such a great time we extended one more to make three.  I had been reluctant to visit San Francisco with my son.  I spent the first nine years of my post college, professional life in San Francisco before moving to New York City.  The city is filled with memories of my twenties.  Good memories, but I had felt finished with the city.  My son and I have started a tradition of taking mother son trips to new cities that neither of us has visited.  San Francisco meant returning to my past.  I ended up having a completely new experience and it was such a treat to see “The City” through my seven year old’s eyes.

On our last night we went to the Tonga Room at our hotel, the Fairmont, and had a blast.  The cover band was amazing and it was so much fun to watch them as they played in a boat that cruised around the plunge pool.  Every twenty minutes rain falls (with lightening) around the pool and my son was quick to put up his drink umbrella.

This week’s manicure commemorates our trip and was my son’s idea. The color is “Lace Me Up”, by Essie Gel Couture.  The manicure and nail art are by Olive & June.
