Shibori

I know we have to wait until June 21st for it to be officially summer, but Memorial Day marks the unofficial start.  I’m getting ready with easy summer dressing.  This shibori t-shirt (from a few years ago – I have linked some great options below) paired with one of my favorite clutches (that doubles as a cross-body or shoulder bag with a hidden strap), white denim and sandals.  It’s a casual look that still looks polished.  Now if only the sun were shining in Southern California it would actually feel like summer.

Memorial White

It’s official!  You can wear white as of this weekend.  This a rule I break all the time, particularly for my favorite super comfy Wit+Wisdom white jeans that I picked up recently in Santa Barbara for well under $100.  I also picked up this fun tie shirt (also a bargain) and considered the two pairs of slides (below) at J. McLaughlin (they are having a huge sale this weekend and the shoes are included!).  I also love this bell sleeved jaquard top, this eyelet shirt, these fun pants and this wrap dress.

I still have my eye on this bag (in a new color combo).

Countdown to Summer

I’m getting excited for travel, swim, parties, longer days, but most of all summer styles!

Now is the time to snap up some great new arrivals at J. Crew. Most items are 40% with the code GETAWAY (through May 28th).  I have listed my top 15 favorites below.  It’s also a great time to pick up basics like my favorite New Balance Sneakers in both the gold/salt and rose gold/navy  ( I have both!)are included in the 40% off.  I wear both constantly and you can throw them in the washer.  They come out beautifully.

I recently stocked up on a few basic t-shirts.  The new supima cotton is so soft.  I grabbed a few solids and stripes.

Mani Monday – Frog Edition

Mommy, they are actually not green!” says my son as I arrive at his class presentation.  “Well I still thought a frog would be cute.” I reply.  “They are orange, but it is cute.” he says with a smile.

This week my son gave a presentation on the poison dart frog.  Did you know that a poison dart frog does not sleep?  Instead it sits very still and rests.  This amphibian is typically bright orange, but some are green.

My first polo shirt in high school was pink with green stripes.  It remains one of my favorite color combinations.  I love both colors in prints too, especially Lilly Pulitzer prints like in this top ,these shorts and this dress.  This week’s color combination has had me missing all my old Lilly clothes.  I did manage to keep one pair of shoes (pictured above) with blue butterflies that were a favorite in my New York days.  I also kept a dress and a few other pieces that I will wear this summer.

The manicure and nail art are by Olive & June.  The color is “Lace Me Up” by Essie Gel Couture.

Canadian Tuxedo

I have Bing Crosby to thank for this look.  The expression “Canadian Tuxedo” is due to Bing being refused service at a hotel in Vancouver, BC due to his all denim ensemble.  Levi’s heard about it and presented him a tuxedo made of denim.

I have worn denim on denim a couple of times (here and here), but I have never paired a denim jacket with denim.  I was wearing this denim jacket with colored denim when I tried on these slim boyfriend jeans and I loved the look so much I left the store in my new jeans.  It brought back cutting the tag in the dressing room with my mom when I was a kid (and what my son often does as he is so excited to wear his new item).  That look included a striped shirt and striped flats.

For this look, I added heels, leopard print and my beloved Luna bag.

Mani Monday – Pink Stripes Edition

“Ummm, Jen, you should come here.”  I hear my husband say as I drift back to sleep.

“What is it?” I reply, struggling to wake up.

“Just come here.”

I get up and walk down the hall to the bathroom.  As I turn towards the door, I see a huge smile on his face as he holds the test.  The test. The one I took and left in the bathroom about thirty minutes ago.  I was so discouraged after almost a year of trying that I did not stick around for the results.  I look at the digital test.  It says “Pregnant”.

“Oh my god!  Really?” I scream.

“Do you think it sat too long?  Should we do another one?” he says.

“I only have the lower tech kinds, but yes.”

I take the test.  “Now we wait and hope for two pink stripes.”

The five-minute wait seems like an hour.  Finally, we look.  There are two distinct pink stripes!

Almost nine years ago, I finally saw two pink stripes, soon after I became a mother.  I have never been more excited about a stripe since (and I do love stripes).  I had to smile on Mother’s Day as I looked down at this week’s mani and at my husband and son in their striped shirts.

The manicure and nail art are by Olive & June.  The colors are “Hot Pop Pink“, “Reflecting Pool“,  “Aqua-Intance“, “Creekside” and “Studio White” by CND Vinylux/

Cool Blue

“You are not one of those people now?” said my husband at dinner.  “Yes, she is.  She wore them the whole time in the grocery store.” said my son.  I love my new blue glasses for many reasons.  My love of the color blue is no secret.  They also provide a cooling shade to the sun that is different from any other pair of sunglasses I have and they manage not to be too dark inside.  So rather than switching to my clear glasses or putting them on my head (thus stretching them out) and squinting in the grocery store, I can keep them on.  Now I am that person.  I get why people keep their glasses on inside. Besides I will take the world in a cool blue hue anytime, especially in harsh lighting.

My spring uniform is in full swing.  I am mixing and matching blazers and fun tees with a variety of clutches and denim (or colored denim).  I have gotten so much wear out of these blush velvet heels from a couple of years ago (I have linked several great options below).

Mani Monday – Blues Edition

Fun weekends sometimes lead to Monday Blues.  Not this week.  I was informed that this Mother’s Day week.  I came home after a Saturday night out with friends to balloons, flowers, gifts, chocolates and the sweetest notes and cards.  I tried to hold off opening anything until Mother’s Day,  but my son insisted yesterday.  It is going to be a great week! My favorite gift is this new coffee mug. I will be drinking my morning cup with a big smile.

The manicure and nail art are by Olive & June.  The colors are “Surrounded by Studs” and “First View” by Essie Gel Couture.

Steely Resolve

“The no shopping challenge changed you.” my husband said the other day.  While I am in the stores more than before my challenge, my purchases are still way down.  I feel the need to stop and consider each purchase.  Then I sleep on it.  Nine times out of ten, I wake up decide that I don’t really need the item.  That was not the case with a recent pair of sunglasses I could not stop thinking about and then splurged on.  I just dropped them off to get my prescription filled.  They will be coming to the blog soon, but here is a peek in the meantime. This pair was a runner-up (I love the vintage shape). This pair is a fun pink option (and under $100!).

Last summer I splurged on this Antonello Tedde clutch with (a strap).  A similar one is on sale! I still have my eye on this bag (in white) for the summer, but the brown is a great neutral option as well.  I am still loving my Cult Gaia Luna bag that I scored right before my shopping detox.
