Fall Confession

I have a confession.  I do not love fall.  I don’t like Pumpkin Spice Lattes.  I enjoyed fall more in a real four season climate (New York, Chicago) where the fashion changes actually went with the weather.  In Los Angeles it still feels like summer with less daylight.  We lose just a little each day, but I notice it.  I can no longer drive to Sunday night mediation with my sunglasses on.  I long for summer.  I miss the long carefree days with no homework and lots of traveling.  Now the school year seems long, even though it flies by.  I prefer summer clothes.  You can’t layer a sweater over a bell sleeve top.  Or can you?

I decided to try just that with this new gingham bell sleeve top.  I chose a cashmere sweater with three quarter sleeves.  I completed the look with my skinny black jeans and favorite new shoes.  Maybe I can learn to love fall…

Leaving Paris

“Monsieur and Madame, your car is here.”  My heart sinks it is fifteen minutes early and I just don’t want to leave.  “Are you ready?” , my husband asks.  “No” I reply sadly.  I soak in the last seconds of our charming hotel lobby.  The Hotel Thoumieux did not disappoint in any way.  “I’ll help get the bags down.  Take a minute.”  I take a last photo of the lobby with its’ perfect leopard print accents and I reluctantly head down the stairs to the car.  We ride silently to Charles De Gaulle as I continue to breathe in Paris.  Right before we arrive, I get organized.  I have a big job to do, filing my VAT paperwork.

“Does this really work?” my husband asks.  “Yes, just wait.  You will see a lot of credits on our credit card.”  As I wait my turn I watch a couple rifling through their luggage madly to present their proof of purchases.  My heart beat hastens.  I know I organized everything with the purchases at the top, but it still makes me nervous.  I go up to the window and hand over my documents.  “Where are you traveling to?”  “Los Angeles”.  My twelve forms are stamped and now I must place each in an envelope and mail them.  I am moving at a fast speed, all efficiency.  My husband snaps a photo.  We can now check in and we are on our way home.  I am distracted by my mental calculations of my refunds for a few moments and forget how sad I am to leave.

It has been three years since our last trip to Paris and I think about it all the time.  Facebook has been serving up daily memories.  I don’t have our next trip planned, yet.  In the meantime, I continue to enjoy these fun travel based t-shirts from J. Crew.  I styled this one with denim, a cashmere cardigan and my new favorite shoes.

Mani Monday – Goldfish Edition

“Harry!  Where is Sally?” I am  panicked.  “I know ten days is a long time, but the time-release feeder still has some food left.  Did you eat her?  Did you eat Sally?”, I plead, desperate for a response I know I’ll never get.

Where could she be?  She jumped to her almost death once before. I came home just in time to put her back in the bowl.  I don’t see her or any remains on the floor near the bowl.  What happened to her?  I knew ten days was too long.  I had planned on eight and ended up extending my trip to San Francisco.  Not since I transported them from 30th and Madison to 13th and University have I been this worried.

Harry and Sally were the perfect New York City pets.  They greeted me each night when I got home.  Cleaning their tank satisfied my need to care for something other than myself and just looking at them lowered my blood pressure (or so I read). I had won them at the Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy within a few months of moving to New York.

For the next four days I eye Harry suspiciously each time I walk by the bowl.  One afternoon I get home early from a meeting and catch my bi-monthly housekeeper on her way out.

“Hello, Consuelo.”

“Hello, Ms. Jennifer.”

“Do you know where Sally went?”

“Who?  Do you have a roommate?

“The fish, the smaller one.”

“Oh, she was stuck to the floor last time.  I cleaned the floor.   I am so sorry.  You were in California and I did not want to bother you.”

“I am so relieved.  I thought Harry ate her.”

She gives me a puzzled look.

“I’m sorry about your fish.”
“Me too.  But I’m relieved Harry isn’t a cannibal.”
