Thyme in the Ranch

I had the nicest afternoon and lunch at Thyme in the Ranch, my Mom’s favorite lunch spot in Rancho Santa Fe, on her birthday eve.  Thyme in the Ranch is so charming and the food is delicious.  They have both indoor and outdoor seating and the decor is filled with florals, so I wore my latest J. Crew Bee shirt in my favorite blue and white stripes.  The challenge to wear pink had been a great way to add more pops of color to my looks.

Blue Herons Taking Flight

This blue heron t-shirt in my favorite navy blue inspired a leaping photo shoot.  I had to include a pop of pink with my Gemma Paisley flats to meet the current J. Crew challenge. Speaking of challenges, this post is my 100th post!  I’m definitely jumping for joy over that.  When I started this blog just over four months ago,  my goal was to publish five days a week. Thank you for following along.

Stripes and Liberty

I am fully embracing the recent J. Crew challenge to wear pink.  My new J. Crew Jane sunglasses are such a fun shade of pink.  I added a pop of pink and green to my new favorite Liberty shirt (that I previously featured in this post Fiddlehead Farm ) with a preppy pink and green striped long sleeve tee. This white denim pencil skirt is quickly becoming my new go to and is perfect for pairing with fall looks to still feel like summer.

Three Days in Boston

My son and I spent three days and three nights in Boston.  It was the first time for both of us.  I had only been to the airport a long time ago. It rained two out of the three days, but we still had a blast.  We bought tickets for a tour trolley with Boston Super Tours which was a great way to get around and see a lot (in the rain).  We had it for all three days and admission to the MIT Museum and a Charles River boat cruise were included.  The drivers were all really interesting and my son is still reciting facts and history he learned on the tours.  We used the trolleys to get around along with the T (which is the oldest subway in the United States) and walking.

We managed to ride the Swan Boats on the one day with no rain.  The same boats have been operating for over 100 years.  You can read about the history of this Boston Landmark here.  We walked around the Boston Common and Public Garden, which were gorgeous.

All the photos of me were taken by my six year old son and for other photos we relied on the kindness of strangers.

The last day after the rain, we had sun!  We stumbled upon the Charles River Esplanade, which we had seen from our river cruise.  We were following directions to Barneys on my Iphone and the map had it in the Charles River.  It was a very lucky mistake. We really enjoyed our time in Boston and look forward to future visits.

I’ll take Paris and the Vineyard

We thoroughly enjoyed our week on Martha’s Vineyard with our East Coast family.  My son and niece are both only children, so it is great for them to have cousin time.  We dominated both Monopoly games, but really need to work on our Ticket to Ride skills.  The Martha’s Vineyard Airport is so charming.  My husband and our luggage returned to Los Angeles, while my son and I stopped in Boston for three nights.  Tune in tomorrow for a post on that leg of the trip.  Until next year MVY…

Martha’s Vineyard – Menemsha Sunset

We had the most perfect weather for our trip to Martha’s Vineyard.  There was only one day of rain and very low humidity.  I have heard it is just so sticky right now.  One afternoon we took a short walk before dinner.  We then headed to Menemsha for dinner at Home Port.  They have the freshest seafood and the sunsets from the Menemsha Harbor are amazing.

New York on the Vineyard

Right before I left for my vacation J. Crew came out with these “destination” art t-shirts.  I had to have the New York version.  I love the navy trim on the sleeves and neck and the graphics are just so quintessentially New York.  I styled it with  cut-off denim shorts, panama hat, sunglasses and one of my favorite pairs of New Balance for J. Crew kicks.  The color is salt and gold and they go with everything.  I love the gold.  It is the perfect polish for a pair of white kicks.  We had a leisurely afternoon at Alley’s General Store.  My son could spend hours there.  They have an unbelievable selection of toys, housewares, toiletries, supplies, you name it.  It is a true general store. It is the oldest operating business on Martha’s Vineyard and was established in 1858.  Then we headed to Oak Bluffs for a casual dinner and ice cream.

Martha’s Vineyard – Oak Bluffs

One of our regular evening locations while on the Vineyard was Oak Bluffs.  The kids wanted to go for the ice cream (Ben and Bill’s is a favorite).  I always like visiting Vineyard Vines (where I got these shorts last year on our first rip).  I’ve linked two similar pairs below.  There are several great restaurants including Slice of Life.  The kids also love running around the green around the gazebo and riding the Flying Circus Carousel, which is the oldest operating platform carousel in the United States.  You really can’t go wrong anywhere on the Vineyard, but evenings in Oak Bluffs are always fun.  Shopping and ice cream?  I’m in.

Stripes and Paisley on the Vineyard

We just got back from our family vacation on the East Coast.  It was our second year staying on Martha’s Vineyard with my sister-in-law and niece.  My sister-in-law has a beautiful house on the island that is walking distance to one of the best restaurants, State Road.  My husband and I took a stroll there one evening for a drink and appetizer and snapped these photos.  I love this new cap-sleeve dress from J. Crew and my favorite Gemma flats in this neon paisley.  I continued the pop of pink with the belt and cardigan and then added a more tonal lucite necklace (which is such a great length).  If you have not checked out J. Crew’s sunglasses that launched this fall,  there are some great styles.

We had an amazing time with great beach days and East Coast vs. West Coast Monopoly games.  My son and I then spent three days exploring Boston.  It was the first time for both of us.  He is six and even managed to be my photographer one day.  Stay tuned for a kiddo photographed Boston outfit post and several others from Martha’s Vineyard.  The island is just magical and it is so great to have a week with our East Coast family.

All Aboard

My son’s childhood is flying by.  He will surprise me with his deep knowledge on a topic (usually cars).  He has always loved vehicles.  He started with garbage trucks.  Garbage day was like Christmas with all three trucks coming to pick up.  The next obsession was trains.

A favorite weekend activity for us has been to visit Travel Town in Griffith Park.  They have an extensive collection of old train cars and even a few you can climb aboard.  They also have a miniature train that goes around the property.  We have been over twenty times starting when he was two. It has always been special Mommy and son time.

My husband decided to join us this past Saturday.  After we rode the train, my son informed us that he really prefers cars now, except for the Live Steamer Trains  at the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum (which only run on Sundays and are right next to Travel Town).   It made me realize just how fast he is growing up and how his interests can change just like that.  I am grateful that we made the time to visit Travel Town together so many times when he loved it so much and we have such great memories.  The Saturday mornings we spent together at Travel Town were precious uninterrupted time. While his childhood is flying by and fleeting, those moments and memories stay with me.

We are definitely going to go ride the Live Steamers next Sunday before he loses interest.  The third Sunday of the month,  Walt’s Barn is also open.  It includes some amazing Walt Disney and railroad memorabilia and was moved from his Holmby Hills property to the museum (more on the history here).   If you have little ones or enjoy old trains and history, I highly recommend Travel Town, the Live Steamer Trains and Walt’s Barn.  The third Sunday of the month is a great way to hit all three.

It was a warm, but not too hot day.  I opted for white jeans, sandals, my favorite drapey sleeveless top (that I have featured here and here) and a new favorite hat to keep me cool.
