Black Watch, Stripes, Sequins and Lace

The holiday party season is upon us.  And, while I don’t usually go for lace —  I’m more of a leopard, stripes and plaid kind of gal –  I recently tried on these lace pants and they are so comfortable (maybe even more than the pajama party pants I featured last week in Pajama Party) that well, I may be a convert … to lace !  I love the feminine touch they give to my Black Watch plaid blazer and striped St. James top.  Now, I’m ready, in comfortable style, for any number of holiday events.

Do you know where the name Black Watch plaid comes from?  It is named for the Black Watch, a regiment formed in 1725 to guard the Scottish Highlands (in kilts).  Now you’ll be ready with an outfit – and some interesting trivia to discuss about it.

Pink and Plaid

There are some amazing pieces in the latest J. Crew roll-out.  This velvet blazer in pink is no exception. It comes in a beautiful pewter as well.  Just when I think I have all the plaid shoes I need, I must have  (at least) one more.  I featured the Sadie Ankle-Straps in Tartan in It’s time for Plaid! a couple of weeks ago.  They sold out right away, as predicted, but have been restocked!  I have worn them non-stop since they arrived last week and I have lost count of the compliments I’ve received.  They are so comfortable and I love the mix with the Black Watch club collar shirt and the pink blazer. Don’t delay, they are likely to sell out.

An Apple for the Teacher

Geometry was by far my favorite subject in High School (as I mentioned in this week’s Mani Monday post).  I loved solving proofs.  I found great comfort in the logic the discipline uses to explain things.  My teacher was very passionate about the subject and a bit of a character.  He often told me that I was the best female Geometry student he’d ever had.  I did challenge him as to why I was simply not the best as I don’t remember missing one single question on any test the whole year.  In any case, he inspired me to excel in math.

Here is an apple and a nice even gingham pattern in his honor.

Pajama Party

I love this new pajama pants as evening wear trend.  Why?  They are elegant and stylish and any night out is more fun when you are comfortable.   J. Crew has a couple of new styles including a pinstriped version that is available online only.  I am wearing the solid version in carbon with a J. Crew silk blouse and velvet sandals from a couple of years ago.

Plaid and Leopard

There is something soothing about the lines and the symmetry of plaid that reminds me of geometry (my favorite High School subject that I mentioned in Mani Monday -Gray Geometric Edition.)  The leopard belt and shoes soften the lines with the random spots.  This shirt is from a couple of years ago, but I just ordered the new black watch with club collar.  I previously featured the new club collar in stripe (now on sale!) and Liberty Paisley.  The new one arrives tomorrow along with both of my plaid shoes.  If you tried to purchase either of the plaid shoes yesterday and found your size sold out, they were just replenished.  The links are here: Sadie Pom-Pom Ankle Strap Flats in Tartan and Scalloped Heels in Festive Plaid

I styled the shirt and leopard accents with the Maddie Pant in navy and a navy cashmere sweater (all from J. Crew).  I bought my second pair of Maddie pants after wearing another color once.  They are so comfortable!  I love that they are streamlined without being too skinny and that they have belt loops.  I featured them recently in olive green in Fall Foilage.  I can’t wait to check them out in Black Watch as well.

Reading Jacket

My six year old son told me this “jacket” is perfect for reading.  It does make me want to curl up with a book.  I love the pop of red with the purple houndstooth.  It is a nice transition to winter.  I just ordered a Black Watch plaid blazer from J. Crew  and a pink velvet blazer  (also from J. Crew) and I can’t wait! The pink velvet blazer is going fast, so I have linked it below.

It’s time for Plaid!

It’s beginning to feel a lot like the holidays which to me says it’s time for plaid.  I am mad for plaid as it brings back happy memories of when the Preppy Handbook was my bible. Plaid dresses up even the most basic holiday attire and adds the perfect touch to home holiday decor.

Last year  J. Crew had plaid shoes and pants.  I was lucky enough to get two of each and wore them repeatedly throughout the holiday season.  They sold out fast (within a day of being on the website).

This year is another chance to add to your prodigious plaid pantheon with their two new adorable styles that are linked and shown below.   They are available now through the links below.  They will hit the website next week and will be featured in the December Style Guide.  Now is the time to snap them up.  I ordered both today.  Don’t delay.

New York State of Mind

I miss New York City on a daily basis.  I loved my life there even if I did feel like money just fell out of my pockets when I left my apartment.  Sometimes I am in shock that I have now lived in Los Angeles for eleven years.  I am married to a New Yorker that has no desire to move back.

In the meantime, I love this J. Crew New York T-shirt.  I featured it this summer in New York on the Vineyard and wore it on September 11 when we “visited” New York at Legoland’s Miniland in Sliding Doors.  It is back in stock along with the Paris version that I featured in Cheers to the long weekend! and I’ll take Paris and the Vineyard.  It is definitely time to plan some travel, but I will enjoy having my two favorite cities on my t-shirts while I dream about my next trip.

I styled my New York t-shirt with my favorite J. Crew for NET-A-PORTER coat that was previously featured in Keeping Warm in the Butler’s Pantry, red flats, jeans, sunglasses and a Sunday New York Times.

Raspberry and pumpkins are an unlikely combination, but I love pink and orange together.  I wore my favorite new raspberry coat from J. Crew to a mini pumpkin patch where we picked up a few pumpkins the other day.  How cute is the window at Hudson Grace?  We are excited for Halloween and my son is still into the family costume idea.
