Welcome to the Hotel Californian

“You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.”  Well I would never want to leave the beautiful Hotel Californian.  My husband and I checked out this new hotel when we had a quick getaway to Santa Barbara to celebrate 10 year anniversary.  It is gorgeous.  They just had their grand opening party last night.    I still can’t get over all the changes to lower State Street since I was in college at UCSB only a few years ago.  Back then there was very little going on lower State Street except a few dive bars. This is the latest addition.  I love all the black and white tile.

Ruffled Neutrals

“No Mommy, you have to wait until Christmas.” said my seven year old.   He had picked out several things for me on a trip to J. Crew when we were shopping for some other gifts.  He had so much fun selecting each item and kept saying, “You have to pretend you did not see this.”  So, as much as I wanted to style this plaid sweatshirt before the holidays, I was glad I did not.  It is more fun to style it with neutrals and the other present I had to wait to open, my Lilleth bag.

Today’s look combines one of my favorite pairs of denim (on sale!), the sweatshirt (on sale!) and my Lilleth bag.  The sweatshirt will be perfect next year for the holidays and I picture wearing it with more plaid like this shirt (on sale!) or these shoes.  For now, a touch of plaid is just right.

Mad for Plaid

I am all in when it comes to plaid.  I love the the tuxedo details on this blazer and could not resist matching my heels.  I kept it high/low with my new favorite vintage straight denim.  If you have been frustrated with distressed holes that continue to grow, these are for you.  They are patched underneath.

I updated my makeup with a few products by Chanel.  Including: a neutral eye shadow palette (Les Beiges) that I am already using more colors than the beige (they made the lightest color twice as large as the other colors – brilliant!).  I am also wearing the mimosa light creating base, blush (elegance)brow pencil (blond dore), eyeliner (feuilles) , volume mascara (black), lip liner (nude) and a new color (light rose) of my favorite long-wearing lip color.

A Few of My Favorite Things…

Plaid, leopard, stripes and camo are a few of my favorite things.  I usually have at least two of them represented.  These plaid shoes have potential to wear well after the holidays.  I styled them with this adorable leopard tee (with a navy collar), denim, cashmere cardigan and custom pouch.

These plaid, leopard and tortoise home accents are perfect for the holidays and beyond.

May Flowers

Bring on the May Poles, flowers,  and Mother’s Day.  May is such a promising month with the longer days, but it is also so busy.  As the school year is coming to an end there is so much going on.

My love of Liberty prints is well documented.  I initially bought this print in the shirt and then decided I have enough shirts.  Then I saw this blazer (which is currently on sale and available in lots of sizes) and I thought it was a fun new way to wear the print.  I love the ruffle detail.

I wore it for Easter and styled it with white jeans, a white linen t-shirt and leopard print accessories.

Modern Suiting

Double Breasted?  Tweed?  Solid? I started thinking about my first suit as early as I can remember.  I think it was Kindergarten.  I remember my first tweed suit (with a skirt of course) that I got for intern interviews in college.  I have lost count of the suits I have had over the years.  I currently have only three.  I recently had a meeting where I needed to be dressed up, but most certainly not in a matched suit.  I wanted to style the pants from one of my Theory suits, the other is Hugo Boss.  I went out in search of a jacket and found not one, but two, that worked well with the pants and my favorite leopard print accessories

Double Leopard

Sometimes less is more.  In fact, that is usually my motto.  Then there are times when more is more.  For this look I doubled down on leopard print.  This equipment blouse is the same cut as I recently discovered in Happy Anniversary – Navy Leopard.  I kept the rest of the look simple with black skinny jeans, leopard heels and a gold clutch.

Greenery is nature’s neutral according to Pantone. It is also a life-affirming shade that is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality. I feel the same way about my favorite neutral, leopard print.

I styled Maddie pants in misty forest, Colette d’Orsay pumps in leopard calf hair, silk pocket blouse, Ryan sunglasses in blush, and an oval lucite link necklace – all by J. Crew.
