Sometimes I do crave basic black and white, but not boring. This sweater and pants fit the bill. I paired them with the most comfortable booties. They do break my no black shoes rule, but with the textured detail they add interest.
We are in the final stretch of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. The sale ends on Sunday, August 6th with prices going back to full price on Monday, August 7th. Don’t miss out. It is also the best time to shop for basics like these, this and these cozy pajamas.
More of my picks are here.
I am having a New York moment with “New York Through a Fashion Eye” by Megan Hess while wearing mostly black. This Edie top is one of my favorite silhouettes after discovering it in plaid here. This one in black and white is so versatile. I styled it with my J. Crew black toothpick jeans, J. Crew black cashmere sweater, J. Crew Ryan Sunglasses and Tod’s Driving Shoes.

I am tickled pink about several of the new arrivals from J. Crew. I went for this black and white geometric top, but had to add three shades of pink and my favorite new pink lip color by Chanel. I don’t tend to wear lipstick. I can still hear my mom saying ” You need lipstick” as I was leaving the house in High School. I guess it is still a way of rebelling. The truth is, it just doesn’t stay on and gets on my water bottle.
At a gift exchange over the holidays, a Chanel Rouge Double Intensite Ultra Wear Lip Color was the hot gift that kept being stolen. I mentioned it to friend and she got me one for Christmas. You apply the lip stain, wait a few minutes and then add a gloss. It stays on all day without being drying. I am wearing Darling Pink.

This week’s black striped mani (which was chip-free seven days later, btw) got me thinking about stripes and basics. As much as I love color, there is an elegance to simple black and white and (of course) my favorite navy and white. Here are my selections from the J. Crew New Arrivals and some great classic buys from the sale section.

I remember my Grandmother teaching me the riddle “What’s black and white and red all over?” when I was about my son’s age. I thought it was so clever. We recently starting subscribing to the Sunday New York Times again after a long stretch of getting our news online. I missed having a paper and also feel like my son should grow up with one in the house. It is great that you can search and find things online and my husband is a big fan of flipboard, but there is something about the tactile experience. My son asks me to read him sections and looks at the photographs.
I moved from San Francisco to New York in 1999 as a result of the Sunday Times. One Sunday I saw an add announcing a new consulting firm that sounded interesting. I wrote a cover letter and sent my resume that day. I ended up moving across the country and being employee eighty-nine of what became a very successful start up. I never would have known about the company if not for a Sunday where I took more time than usual to read the paper.
I take my time reading it now. Sometimes I am catching an article on a Tuesday afternoon with my lunch. It is not about the headlines and being up to the minute. It is about enjoying the experience. And I am finding articles I likely would not have found online.

I love dresses for summer. They are so easy, one step and you are dressed and yet you also feel more dressed up. There is nothing better to beat the heat. I have this J. Crew dress in navy from last year and also coral from this year. I was so excited to see it in Gingham. The shoes are super comfortable and are on sale.
J. Crew Sandals

Note: this dress, like the Candy Stripe Cashmere Shell from this post and Liberty Blouse from this post, keeps selling out and then they are each often replenished the next day. So don’t be discouraged by seeing sold out at first. I recommend trying the link in the morning for the most inventory.
