Into the Preppy Wild

My final outfit for the J. Crew challenge has a preppy twist with my sweater around my neck.   I decided to go matchy matchy with the shirt and shoes.  I wore this Ratti “Into the Wild” print four other ways in these four posts: Tropical Gold, Party Pants , Tropical Stripes , Going Bananas,  and Into the Wild and Off the Shoulder

Turquoise Gingham

I can’t get enough of gingham in the summer.  I love the pop of orange with this turquoise gingham shirt from J.Crew.  Did  you know that turquoise represents humor and using it visually can ease a tough situation.  It certainly is a happy color.

Tropical Gold

About a month ago J. Crew issued a challenge to wear one floral print five ways.  I chose the Ratti “Into the Wild” print.  I featured the print in these three posts: here, here and here.  Today I am styling the ruffle-sleeve top with my favorite white jeans and gold espadrilles.  Stay tuned for my fifth look next week…

Shades of Blue

It is no secret that blue is my favorite color.  I found the 10,000 Buddhas wall by Amanda Giacomini in Venice to be so serene.  You can read more on Amanda and the 10,000 Buddhas project here.

Of course, I was dressed to match.  My favorite striped flats from J. Crew have been marked down again, so they are a super deal.  My favorite and oh-so-comfy lookout high-rise jeans from J.Crew are also on sale.  My navy gingham button up and panama hat are both on constant repeat along with my Veronica tote from Parker Thatch.

Pineapple

Pineapples make me want to go on vacation.    In the meantime, as the fall fashions are coming in, the summer sales are amazing.  Everything in this outfit (except the Pineapple tee) is on promotion or sale.  I featured these J. Crew Rory pants in navy in this post.  They are now on sale (plus 40% off).  They are a breezy alternative to skinny jeans or shorts.  I have one of my favorite hats on along with my gold espadrilles that have been on constant repeat.

Breezy Neutrals

I have had several hats on rotation protecting me from the sun lately   They are also a good way to get one more day out of a blow dry.  I wrote two posts on hair game changers here and here.

This is one of my favorite new hats.  I styled it with my aqua AG Jeans (that are on sale plus 50% at Calypso) and a J. Crew ivory eyelet top (previously seen in navy in this post).  It is a breezy summer look that is comfortable and great in warmer weather.

East River Sailing Club

Sailing the East River? That sounds fun. A friend and I kayaked the Hudson River one afternoon. We were alongside the garbage barges at various points. When I lived in New York City I lived in the West Village and occasionally walked home from work along the Hudson River. I did not spend that much time on the East Side, except for a few restaurants, uptown shopping and museums, of course. The one thing I really miss about New York is how easily accessible things were in comparison to Los Angeles. Sporting events, concerts, museums were all just a subway ride or (usually) quick cab ride away. I LOVED not having a car. I went to a lot more of these events. I’m sure accessibility had a lot to do with it. It’s a major hassle to get across Los Angeles to an event at most times of day. I’m on the West Side and I feel like Pasadena is another world.

While I lived in Manhattan I did and saw a lot. I had lots of visitors and did just about every touristy thing, too. It was a lot of fun. I have been trying to make sure my family does not stay too insulated in our little corner of Los Angeles. In yesterday’s post I talked about our trips to Griffith Park. We try to explore different areas as often as possible.

This t-shirt made me long for a New York trip this summer. We are heading East soon, but not to New York. In the meantime,  I’ll think about sailing the East River and my next trip to New York. I love the blue of this t-shirt and I styled it with my Liberty Gemma flats and favorite white jeans.

All Aboard

My son’s childhood is flying by.  He will surprise me with his deep knowledge on a topic (usually cars).  He has always loved vehicles.  He started with garbage trucks.  Garbage day was like Christmas with all three trucks coming to pick up.  The next obsession was trains.

A favorite weekend activity for us has been to visit Travel Town in Griffith Park.  They have an extensive collection of old train cars and even a few you can climb aboard.  They also have a miniature train that goes around the property.  We have been over twenty times starting when he was two. It has always been special Mommy and son time.

My husband decided to join us this past Saturday.  After we rode the train, my son informed us that he really prefers cars now, except for the Live Steamer Trains  at the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum (which only run on Sundays and are right next to Travel Town).   It made me realize just how fast he is growing up and how his interests can change just like that.  I am grateful that we made the time to visit Travel Town together so many times when he loved it so much and we have such great memories.  The Saturday mornings we spent together at Travel Town were precious uninterrupted time. While his childhood is flying by and fleeting, those moments and memories stay with me.

We are definitely going to go ride the Live Steamers next Sunday before he loses interest.  The third Sunday of the month,  Walt’s Barn is also open.  It includes some amazing Walt Disney and railroad memorabilia and was moved from his Holmby Hills property to the museum (more on the history here).   If you have little ones or enjoy old trains and history, I highly recommend Travel Town, the Live Steamer Trains and Walt’s Barn.  The third Sunday of the month is a great way to hit all three.

It was a warm, but not too hot day.  I opted for white jeans, sandals, my favorite drapey sleeveless top (that I have featured here and here) and a new favorite hat to keep me cool.

Wanderlust abroad and at home

Venice Beach or Paris?  These photos remind me of Paris and give me wanderlust, but also remind me that there is so much to explore in my own backyard. My mother is a very talented photographer and a wiz on her iPhone (at least with editing photos, we are working on the rest). We did several outfit shoots in Venice when she visited last weekend. There are so many great walls and doors (especially the doors in Monday’s post). These photos really do remind me of Paris where The Navy Leopard was born (more about that in this post).  I love the iron gate and cool bike rack. As I dream about my next trip, I will continue to explore the local sights.
