Mani Friday – Blue Leopard Edition

This week I went with a summery shade of blue and a few leopard print accent nails.

The color is “Regent’s Place” by Nails Inc in gel effects.  It has a similar staying power as gel, but it is regular polish. The manicure and nail art are by Olive & June.

Have a great weekend. If you have not already, be sure to check out my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale post here.

Happy Friday!

Out and About – Bondi Harvest

It has been a while since I did my first and only “Out and About” post.  I am only inspired  to post about places that are unique that I really love.  My previous “Out and About” post is here.  I happened upon Bondi Harvest through Instagram (this best source for finding things in cities you plan to visit and in this case, my own home town) and immediately wanted to share my find. Bondi Harvest is tucked away in a corner of Santa Monica in a parking lot among several production companies.

They are also known for their coffee which is Vittoria.  It is the largest coffee company in Australia and is in several restaurants in the US.  The story of Vittoria is an interesting three generation success story that you can read about here.

It has a great laid back Australian beach vibe that suits the healthy, but super yummy menu. It is very comfortable and serene.

Their shelf game is strong and includes Organic Vittoria coffee, tea by Art of Tea, spices and every surfer’s best friend Dr. Zog’s sex wax (which really reminded me of my high school days and the surf crowd).

They serve breakfast and lunch and are open Monday through Friday from 7 am to 4 pm with breakfast all day.  I opted for one of their tartines and a green smoothie.  The smoothies are not huge (and are also at a reasonable price) so they are perfect with a tartine.  The Sweet Halloumi was my tartine of choice.  It combined avocado toast with grilled halloumi cheese, pistachios and a touch of wild honey  I am always disappointed when places only have huge smoothies and you just want something a little extra with your smaller meal.  When I ordered, I considered the Peanut Butter Bomb, but was encouraged to get the On the Green as it would taste great and I would leave feeling healthy.  That was 100% correct.  The combination was perfect!

I left already thinking about my next visit and, in fact, came back the same day with my son to try the Peanut Butter Bomb.  He was fresh from camp and already in swimwear, so he fit right in with the decor.  He is always happy to help with blog post research when it involves trying new treats.  We both liked it, but I prefer the On the Green as it is packed with greens and still tastes amazing.IMG_8018

My visits to Bondi Harvest helped to satiate the wanderlust I mentioned last week in this post.  Australia is definitely on my travel list.  It was nice to see a different corner of Santa Monica and feel like I had a taste of Australia.  The sign on the fruit basket says it all.  It was real, healthy whole food that left me feeling great and was delicious.

Breezy Neutrals

I have had several hats on rotation protecting me from the sun lately   They are also a good way to get one more day out of a blow dry.  I wrote two posts on hair game changers here and here.

This is one of my favorite new hats.  I styled it with my aqua AG Jeans (that are on sale plus 50% at Calypso) and a J. Crew ivory eyelet top (previously seen in navy in this post).  It is a breezy summer look that is comfortable and great in warmer weather.

East River Sailing Club

Sailing the East River? That sounds fun. A friend and I kayaked the Hudson River one afternoon. We were alongside the garbage barges at various points. When I lived in New York City I lived in the West Village and occasionally walked home from work along the Hudson River. I did not spend that much time on the East Side, except for a few restaurants, uptown shopping and museums, of course. The one thing I really miss about New York is how easily accessible things were in comparison to Los Angeles. Sporting events, concerts, museums were all just a subway ride or (usually) quick cab ride away. I LOVED not having a car. I went to a lot more of these events. I’m sure accessibility had a lot to do with it. It’s a major hassle to get across Los Angeles to an event at most times of day. I’m on the West Side and I feel like Pasadena is another world.

While I lived in Manhattan I did and saw a lot. I had lots of visitors and did just about every touristy thing, too. It was a lot of fun. I have been trying to make sure my family does not stay too insulated in our little corner of Los Angeles. In yesterday’s post I talked about our trips to Griffith Park. We try to explore different areas as often as possible.

This t-shirt made me long for a New York trip this summer. We are heading East soon, but not to New York. In the meantime,  I’ll think about sailing the East River and my next trip to New York. I love the blue of this t-shirt and I styled it with my Liberty Gemma flats and favorite white jeans.

All Aboard

My son’s childhood is flying by.  He will surprise me with his deep knowledge on a topic (usually cars).  He has always loved vehicles.  He started with garbage trucks.  Garbage day was like Christmas with all three trucks coming to pick up.  The next obsession was trains.

A favorite weekend activity for us has been to visit Travel Town in Griffith Park.  They have an extensive collection of old train cars and even a few you can climb aboard.  They also have a miniature train that goes around the property.  We have been over twenty times starting when he was two. It has always been special Mommy and son time.

My husband decided to join us this past Saturday.  After we rode the train, my son informed us that he really prefers cars now, except for the Live Steamer Trains  at the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum (which only run on Sundays and are right next to Travel Town).   It made me realize just how fast he is growing up and how his interests can change just like that.  I am grateful that we made the time to visit Travel Town together so many times when he loved it so much and we have such great memories.  The Saturday mornings we spent together at Travel Town were precious uninterrupted time. While his childhood is flying by and fleeting, those moments and memories stay with me.

We are definitely going to go ride the Live Steamers next Sunday before he loses interest.  The third Sunday of the month,  Walt’s Barn is also open.  It includes some amazing Walt Disney and railroad memorabilia and was moved from his Holmby Hills property to the museum (more on the history here).   If you have little ones or enjoy old trains and history, I highly recommend Travel Town, the Live Steamer Trains and Walt’s Barn.  The third Sunday of the month is a great way to hit all three.

It was a warm, but not too hot day.  I opted for white jeans, sandals, my favorite drapey sleeveless top (that I have featured here and here) and a new favorite hat to keep me cool.

Mani Friday – Plain White Edition

I love white in summer – white jeans, a white dress, a crisp white shirt.  Until this week, I had never worn white nail polish.  I had decided I wanted it on my toes this week.  I also rarely match my manicure and pedicure.  I had a conversation with a friend who always matches.  She attributed it to her Virgo nature.  It stuck with me and I had to overcome my Gemini nature of not always being able to decide and choose just one color.  I liked it so much, that I decided to skip the art this week.  The plain white is the art.  I also had plain white on the brain as I was headed to a Summer concert to see The Plain White Ts.  They were amazing!

The color is “Amazing Grace” by Deborah Lippmann.  The manicure is by Olive & June.

Happy Friday!

Wanderlust abroad and at home

Venice Beach or Paris?  These photos remind me of Paris and give me wanderlust, but also remind me that there is so much to explore in my own backyard. My mother is a very talented photographer and a wiz on her iPhone (at least with editing photos, we are working on the rest). We did several outfit shoots in Venice when she visited last weekend. There are so many great walls and doors (especially the doors in Monday’s post). These photos really do remind me of Paris where The Navy Leopard was born (more about that in this post).  I love the iron gate and cool bike rack. As I dream about my next trip, I will continue to explore the local sights.

Party Pants

Jenna Lyons dubbed these pants “party pants”. (Jenna’s current picks are here).  I could not agree more.  They are so fun and have this cool, modern seventies vibe.  I feel like entertaining in a a sunken living room with a wet bar and serving tropical drinks. This may be my favorite piece in the whole Ratti “Into the Wild” collection.  The pants are linen and a great cut.  They have been sold out, but keep popping back.  As of blog press time, there were a few sizes available.  It may be worth a bit of jcrew.com stalking if at first you get the dreaded “We’re sorry. This item has been so popular, it has sold out.”

Mad for Plaid

I’ve always loved plaid – plaid pants for the holidays, plaid shirts, plaid shoes and plaid shorts.   I was so excited when this pretty, plaid, off the shoulder dress went on sale at J. Crew in the lightest, breeziest silk.  I styled it with one of my favorite new hats, a raffia clutch and my denim pom pom flats (that are sold out, but I linked several great options below). I featured the “Into the Wild” print off the shoulder dress in this post a couple of weeks ago.  I was slow to the off the shoulder trend and now I am loving it for summer.
