Leaving Paris

“Monsieur and Madame, your car is here.”  My heart sinks it is fifteen minutes early and I just don’t want to leave.  “Are you ready?” , my husband asks.  “No” I reply sadly.  I soak in the last seconds of our charming hotel lobby.  The Hotel Thoumieux did not disappoint in any way.  “I’ll help get the bags down.  Take a minute.”  I take a last photo of the lobby with its’ perfect leopard print accents and I reluctantly head down the stairs to the car.  We ride silently to Charles De Gaulle as I continue to breathe in Paris.  Right before we arrive, I get organized.  I have a big job to do, filing my VAT paperwork.

“Does this really work?” my husband asks.  “Yes, just wait.  You will see a lot of credits on our credit card.”  As I wait my turn I watch a couple rifling through their luggage madly to present their proof of purchases.  My heart beat hastens.  I know I organized everything with the purchases at the top, but it still makes me nervous.  I go up to the window and hand over my documents.  “Where are you traveling to?”  “Los Angeles”.  My twelve forms are stamped and now I must place each in an envelope and mail them.  I am moving at a fast speed, all efficiency.  My husband snaps a photo.  We can now check in and we are on our way home.  I am distracted by my mental calculations of my refunds for a few moments and forget how sad I am to leave.

It has been three years since our last trip to Paris and I think about it all the time.  Facebook has been serving up daily memories.  I don’t have our next trip planned, yet.  In the meantime, I continue to enjoy these fun travel based t-shirts from J. Crew.  I styled this one with denim, a cashmere cardigan and my new favorite shoes.

Mani Monday – Goldfish Edition

“Harry!  Where is Sally?” I am  panicked.  “I know ten days is a long time, but the time-release feeder still has some food left.  Did you eat her?  Did you eat Sally?”, I plead, desperate for a response I know I’ll never get.

Where could she be?  She jumped to her almost death once before. I came home just in time to put her back in the bowl.  I don’t see her or any remains on the floor near the bowl.  What happened to her?  I knew ten days was too long.  I had planned on eight and ended up extending my trip to San Francisco.  Not since I transported them from 30th and Madison to 13th and University have I been this worried.

Harry and Sally were the perfect New York City pets.  They greeted me each night when I got home.  Cleaning their tank satisfied my need to care for something other than myself and just looking at them lowered my blood pressure (or so I read). I had won them at the Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy within a few months of moving to New York.

For the next four days I eye Harry suspiciously each time I walk by the bowl.  One afternoon I get home early from a meeting and catch my bi-monthly housekeeper on her way out.

“Hello, Consuelo.”

“Hello, Ms. Jennifer.”

“Do you know where Sally went?”

“Who?  Do you have a roommate?

“The fish, the smaller one.”

“Oh, she was stuck to the floor last time.  I cleaned the floor.   I am so sorry.  You were in California and I did not want to bother you.”

“I am so relieved.  I thought Harry ate her.”

She gives me a puzzled look.

“I’m sorry about your fish.”
“Me too.  But I’m relieved Harry isn’t a cannibal.”

Arking into to Fall

Welcome Fall!  I am easing into fall while the temperatures are still a bit warm with camo, bell sleeves and my favorite ark bag that was on repeat all Summer.  Not only do I love the look of this bag (which is back in stock, by the way), but it holds a lot and has proven to be very practical.  I may need to add this tortoise shell one and this shape (that packs flat) to my collection.

Hip to be Square

I’ve driven by this wall in Los Angeles so many times by myself and thought it would be fun for an outfit post.  This past weekend, my son and husband were taking me to the shopping event at J. Crew and they both pointed to it as we drive by and said “that would make a great shoot”.  So we stopped and did a quick shoot in my event outfit (which included my favorite new shoes).  I styled them with my latest denim obsession, New York sweatshirt and a gingham button-down.

Thank you to all who came to the event.  Stay tuned for an evening event in the next month or so.

Vintage Stripes

1984 called, they want your rugby back.   This new rugby from J. Crew is perfectly updated for 2017 with a nostalgic nod to 1984.  It is one of the new arrivals that I am loving (in fact, so much, that I got it in pink as well).  I styled it simple with my favorite new sneakers and white jeans.

Please join me and Amy ( of @howtojcrew fame) at J. Crew at The Grove in Los Angeles this Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm.  We will be on hand to style looks and take a look at the new arrivals.  We will have refreshments, a special discount and the first ten people to arrive and mention Amy or me will receive a $25 J. Crew gift card.  If you are not in the Los Angeles area look for a special giveaway on Instagram soon.

Baby Blue

I’m still easing into fall with baby blue.  As my favorite season, Summer, is coming to a close, I am enjoying transitional pieces.  I will miss the longer days.  In fact, I am already feeling rushed to walk my dog in the evening.  Evenings are now spent with homework and an earlier bedtime.  The relaxed summer evenings have ended.

Fall fashion is the one thing I look forward to in the fall.  J. Crew has just launched some amazing new arrivals.  Please join me and Amy Storck (of @howtojcrew fame) at The Grove in Los Angeles on Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm.  There will be refreshments and 20% off your purchase of $100 or more.  We will both be on hand to help with styling.  We hope to see you there!
